These paintings hold the quality of stillness after a long journey.
Original oil paintings by Roger Alby Richter · Newport, Port Adelaide · South Australia
There are coastlines where the water has weight. Eucalyptus trees whose copper bark seems lit from within. Skies that carry the particular silver of just before a storm. Faces with one amber eye catching a light you didn’t see enter the room.
Roger Alby Richter came to painting the long way around — through the Navy, through oil rigs, through a life lived largely outdoors and largely in motion. He paints now from his studio in Port Adelaide, beside the harbour that appears so often in his work. Every piece carries that journey: the grit of the early years pressed beneath the luminous calm of the life he has built since.
