Roger Alby Richter

In the studio, Newport Port Adelaide — with Coastal Gums on the easel.

I’m a 67-year-old painter based in Newport, Port Adelaide, South Australia, and I work out of my garage — which suits me just fine. Painting is something I’ve done throughout my life, but over the past few years it’s become almost full time, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I’ve completed around 500 paintings and sold just over 100 of them. Most of my work is landscape — the South Australian coastline, the Flinders Ranges, the Barossa, the bush — the places I know and love. Recently I’ve been drawn toward abstraction, and I feel I’m moving in the direction of abstract realism: work that stays rooted in the world but pushes toward something more expressive and felt.

The artists I return to for inspiration are Colley Whisson, David Dunlop, and Andrew Tischler — painters who share a directness and a love of light that I aspire to in my own work. I’m also deeply influenced by the Australian masters, particularly Arthur Streeton and John Singer Sargent, whose painterly confidence and sense of place I find endlessly instructive.

Every painting I sell is a unique original. If you’d like to commission a piece or just have a question, I’d love to hear from you.
