About the Artist:
From the Oil Rig to the Easel: Art Forged in Grit, Finished in Grace.
My name is Roger Alby Richter, and my journey to the canvas was anything but a straight line. Born in 1959 in Windsor, NSW, my early life was defined by the wild independence of a Pitt Town farm—evading goannas and exploring creeks. But life quickly shifted from the freedom of the bush to the rigid structures of the world.
I spent my younger years in the “highly fuelled” environments of the Royal Australian Navy as an aircraft technician and later on the brutal, isolated oil rigs and suffocating subfloor spaces spraying for termites. I’ve known the weight of history through my Czech father’s WWII trauma, the hardship of poverty, and the soul-searching silence of being adrift in my youth.
The Battle of the Brush For decades, my hands were trained for precision, mechanics, and survival. Today, at 67, those same hands are learning the art of letting go. In my studio, a daily battle takes place: the Technician in me wants order and accuracy, but the Artist—the man who finally found the love of his life and the freedom to breathe 17 years ago—demands expression and peace.
The “Old Guy” always wins.
My Work
I paint in a unique fusion of Acrylics and Oils. I use the fast, resilient nature of acrylics to build the “grit” and structure of my foundations—a nod to my industrial past. I then layer rich, soulful oils over the top to find the “Space, Calm, and Beauty” that defines my life today.
- Landscapes: Expansive windows into the serenity I once searched for.
- Abstract Faces: Raw, honest explorations of today’s emotions—capturing the connection and love that replaced a lifetime of looking.
- Flowers & Animals: A return to the vibrant, untainted vitality of my earliest memories.
